I was on a short vacation in India during Diwali (the festival of lights) two weeks ago.

Good food and sweets are integral to Indian festivals. Diwali is the festival when most sweets are consumed.

On my way back, during a chat with a fellow passenger, she asked me which Indian sweets you recommend. I struggled to answer the question since I had tried so many sweets during my trip.

Now, after taking some time to reflect, here is my shortlist of recommended sweets that one can get outside India. In India, all these sweets have a lot of variants in different parts of the country.

Kaju Barfi/ Kaju Katli - Crushed cashew nuts cooked with the right consistency of sugar syrup.

Gulab Jamun – Soft fried dumplings made mainly from milk solids.

Laddus - Laddus are primarily made from flour, fat (ghee/butter/oil), and sugar.

Rasgulla/ Rasagola - It is made from ball-shaped dumplings of cottage cheese and semolina dough cooked in light sugar syrup made of sugar.

Kheer - Kheer is a rice pudding. It is flavored with cardamom, raisins, saffron, cashews, pistachios, or almonds.
